성격특성 중 성실성은 자기통제력이 우수한 특성으로 인해 삶의 많은 긍정적 요인들과 관련되어 왔다. 그러나 최근 높은 자기통제력을 지닌 사람들이 자아가 고갈된 특수한 상황에서 자기통제 실패현상이 증가하는 역설적 효과가 확인되었다. 본 연구는 성실성과 자아고갈이 자기통제 실패에 미치는 영향을 실험연구를 통해 검증하고자 하였으며, 자기통제 실패의 결과로 부정행위를 측정하였다. 이를 위해 대학생 남녀 308명에게 성실성 척도로 설문을 실시하여 상⋅하위 25%에 해당하는 64명을 연구대상으로 하였다. 참여자들은 자아고갈 유발여부에 따라 자아고갈조건과 통제조건으로 나누어 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 자아가 고갈되지 않은 상황에서 성실성은 부정행위에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 하지만, 자아고갈조건에서 성실성이 높은 집단이 낮은 집단에 비해 부정행위가 더욱 증가하는 역설적 효과가 검증되었다. 이러한 결과는 성실성이 높은 사람들이 오히려 자아고갈의 부정적 효과에 더욱 취약할 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 성실성과 자아고갈이 부정행위에 미치는 영향을 알아봄으로써 성실한 사람들이 보이는 충동적인 일탈 행위에 대한 원인을 밝혔다는 점에 의의가 있다.
Conscientiousness has been related to many positive factors in life due to its superior self-control. However, recently, an ironic effect was confirmed in that people with high self-control increased their self-control failure in which their ego was depleted. This study aims to verify the effect of conscientiousness and ego depletion on self-control failure through experimental research, and to measure cheating as a result of self-control failure. To this end, 308 university students were evaluated for their conscientiousness and 64 students who were in the 25 percent upper and lower on conscientiousness, were selected as participants. The experiment was conducted by dividing the participants into conditions of ego depletion and controlled where no depletion was manipulated. As a result of the study, there were no significant difference in the cheating between the high conscientious group and the low conscientious group under the control conditions. However, under the condition of ego depletion, the high conscientiousness showed a greater increase in cheating than the group with low conscientiousness, confirming the ironic effect. This study is significant in that it identifies the cause of impulsive deviance shown by conscientious people by examining the effect of ego depletion and conscientiousness on cheating behavior.
