본 연구의 목적은 자녀가 아동기에서 청소년기로 전환하는 시기에, 양육실천자이자 모-자녀관계를 구성하는 주체인 어머니는 무엇을 체험하는지 심층적으로 탐색하는 것이다. 연구참여자는 첫 자녀가 초등학교 4학년에 재학 중인 어머니 15명이었고, 개별 심층면접을 실시하였다. 주제분석법으로 면접자료를 분석한 결과, 첫 번째 대주제는 ‘사춘기 길목의 아이와 엄마’로 구성하였고, 하위주제는 ‘사춘기의 시작’, ‘스마트폰, 게임과의 전쟁’, ‘한 발짝 떨어지기’였다. 두 번째 대주제는 ‘4학년 아이 공부시키기’였고, 하위주제는 ‘아이의 학습에 대한 불안, 사교육에 대한 고민’, ‘공부 습관 들이기’, ‘내 아이는 가르치기 힘들어’였다. 마지막 대주제는 ‘나는 11년 차 엄마’였고, 하위주제는 ‘삶의 중심은 아이’, ‘엄마의 시행착오’, ‘엄마도 성장 중’, ‘나를 찾고 싶은 마음’이었다. 본 연구는 초기 사춘기 모-자녀관계에 대한 선행연구의 지평을 넓히고, 모성이데올로기와 여성의 개별성이 동시에 강조되는 사회적 양가성의 맥락에서 어머니역할 ‘11년 차’ 여성들의 고군분투와 갈등, 성장을 밝혔다는 점에서 연구의 의의가 있다.
The purpose of this study is to explore mothers’ experiences during their child’s transition from childhood to adolescence as active agents who practice mothering and who co-construct the mother-child relationship with their developing child. Our interview participants were 15 mothers whose first child was in 4th grade. Our thematic analysis revealed two overarching themes and several subsequent themes. The first theme, “the mother and the child at the corner of puberty,” had three sub-themes: (a) the beginning of puberty, (b) fighting against smartphones and online games, and (c) learning to stay one step away from the child. The second theme was “managing the 4th grader’s studies,” which included three sub-themes: (a) anxiety about academic achievement, considerations about private education, (b) creating study habits, and (c) difficulties teaching one’s own child. The third theme, “a mother with 10 years of experience,” included four sub-themes: (a) the child as the center of life, (b) trial and error as a mother, (c) on-going growth as a mother, and (d) desire to pursue their own identity and career. In the context of sociological ambivalence between the ideology of motherhood and an emphasis on women s individuality in contemporary South Korea, this study contributes to the literature by expanding our understanding of the mother-child relationship in early puberty and by revealing the efforts, struggles, and personal growth of mothers who had practiced mothering for a decade.
