인간 삶을 편하게 해 준다는 산업화, 정보화가 빠르게 이루어지고 있는 현대 사회 속에서 인간들은 또 다른 한 편으로 인간성을 상실할 위험성을 안고 살아가면서 심신이 황폐화된 환경 속에 노출되어 있다. 이러한 인간 조건 속에서 원초적 영성에 대한 갈구가 그 어느 때보다 더 절실하다. 우리는 지금 현대 사회에 맞는 대안 영성의 계발과 수련이 강하게 요청되는 시기에 와 있는 것이다. 이러한 시대적 맥락 속에서 원불교의 영성과 영성수련에 주목하게 된다. 원불교는 구한말 어지러운 사회 분위기 속에서 태동하여 일제 강점기와 해방 이후 혼란한 시기를 지내오면서 괄목할 만한 성장을 이루어내었다. 그러한 성장의 이면에는 격동기 한국인들의 마음을 어루만져준 그 무엇인가가, 즉 현대 한국인들에게 들어맞는 영성이 있었기 때문이 아니었나 하는 추론을 갖게 한다. 원불교의 영성은 개인적 수련과 사회적 실천을 균형 있게 체득하는 정신수양, 사리연구, 작업취사라는 삼학의 병진이라고 정리된다. 그 중에서도 수련의 요체로서 정신수양은 원불교의 실천적 영성의 특징을 우선적으로 드러낸다. 한국의 종교들은 이 점에서 원불교로부터 배울 점이 있다고 본다. 다만 한 세기 전에 이루어진 종교 창시자의 깨달음이 현대 한국인들에게 보다 더 효과적으로 영향을 주기 위하여서는 현대적 맥락에 맞추는 작업[dynamic equivalence]이나 해석학적 반성이 요청된다.
In rapidly industrialized society, the Korean people is living in the profound danger of dehumanization. So they are looking for an alternative spirituality, which is able to cure the wounded mind of the modern human being.Won-Buddhism was found at the end of the Joseon-dynasty. That was really uncertain and unstable period. but during this difficult time Won-Buddhism has made a surprising development. Then there must be a certain reason. I suppose, it is the very suitable spirituality of the Won-Buddhism that attracts the Korean people. Therefore my research is focused on the spirituality and spiritual training of the Won-Buddhism. The core spirituality and spiritual training of the Won-Buddhism is, in my opinion, balanced training of personal spirituality and social practice. This kind of balanced spirituality is named samhak (threefold learning) and its fundamental is jeongsinsuyang (training of the mind).For the new millennium and for the 21st century but Korean religions, Won-Buddhism included, need to be renewed for their new mission, namely to create an alternative spirituality for modern mankind. Korean religions need at this moment dynamic equivalence and hermeneutic renewal.
