Education reflects the educational understanding of the day. The education of Korean enlightening period(1876-1910) reflects the educational understanding of the day. There are so many studies on the education of the enlightening period in Korea. Those conclude as follows: The intellectuals did not debate sufficiently on Korean tradition and Western modernity because of national emergency. On this situation Korean government was absorbed in importing Western education. Regarding this conclusion as an issue, I studies Yu Kil Jun s educational theory. In fact, Korea was in no condition to debate on Confucian tradition and Western modernity. Yet Yu Kil Jun who had considered systematically the enlightenment of Korea tried to harmonize Confucian tradition and Western modernity.He was accustomed to thinking moralistically on the basis of Confucian tradition. In the enlightening period, the idea of religious freedom and the principle of the separation of state and religion were introduced in Korea. Confucianism and the formal education started to were separated. In that situation he tried to combine the traditional education and the modern education through carrying out the moralistic cultivation and the intellectual development at the same time. In this view he set up the educational image of ideal human being and was engaged in educational practices toward the enlightenment of Korea.
