생태교육이란 전 지구의 모든 유기체와 무기체가 제 각각의 존재 역할을 하면서 상생적 작용 속에서 존재의미를 이루어 간다는 철학적 가치를 바탕으로 하여, 이와 관련한 자연 현상적 관점을 교육하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 여기에는 세상의 사물 모두를 동등한 존재가치로 인정한다는 관점이 내재되어 있다. 동학의 교육내용도 기본적으로 이런 관점을 바탕으로 하고 있다는 점에서 생태적이라고 할 수 있다. 동학의 교육내용 중 교리적인 부분에 해당하는 불연기연(不然其然)과 무위이화(無爲而化)의 사상이 이런 생태교육의 요소를 갖고 있다는 것이다. 즉 세상의 ‘드러난 질서’인 ‘기연’과, 보이지 않는 근원적인 ‘숨겨진 질서’인 ‘불연’은 구분된 것이 아니라 상호 연관되어 교차되고 있다는 것이 불연기연의 원리다. 이는 생태교육의 관점과 일치하고 있다. 아울러 이러한 원리에 의하여 세상 모든 사물이 작위 없이(無爲) 스스로 변화되고 이루어진다(而化)는 무위이화의 교리 역시 이런 관점의 전제 위에 놓여 있다는 점에서 생태적이라는 것이다.그리고 동학의 교육내용 중 실천적인 것으로 여성과 아동존중사상 역시 생태적인 요소를 함의하고 있다는 것이다. 그것은 여성과 아동을 억압과 착취의 대상으로만 취급하던 기존의 사고로부터 벗어나야 한다는 것으로 이는 곧 여성과 아동을 환경과 생태계와 마찬가지로 억압과 착취의 대상으로 동일시하고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 여성과 아동존중의 교육내용도 생태적 교육관을 갖고 있다고 하겠다.
There are several claims and assumptions in ecologism. They all have the basic ideas such as humanism and civilization. However, ecologism wants a change about the thought and order of humanism and civilization. It claims that the whole universe or all beings of global ecological system has the same with the values of humanism and civilization. On this ecological view, the education has the value as the purpose when all global organism and non-organism keep their lives with all interactions among them. Thus, the ecological education means to realize oneself and teach it. In addition, the teaching method also refers to only education involved ecological views. A problem is suggested whether Bul-yeon-gi-yeon and Mu-wi-i-wha become educational contents for realizing the value and the ideology of Yang-cheon-ju. In other words, Bul-yeon-gi-yeon is the basic principle saying unreasonableness of dualism, known and unknown orders. That is the teaching contents for realization of Dong-hak. It is also possible to explain with the same logic that Mu-wi-i-wha is also resulted from Bul-yeon-gi-yeon. As a result, the world view of Dong-hak basically takes up the ecological position. In other words, the core ideas such as Shi-cheon-ju & Yang-cheon-ju, and I-cheon-sik-cheon & Bul-yeon-gi-yeon have the logical bases of thought change from the present paradigms such as humanism, civilization and centering for male to the renovated paradigms such as equality of all things, ecological views and equality of a human being. This means that the ideology of Dong-hak has the ecological world views.
