Ven. Bogak (普覺) Iryeon(一然, 1206∼1289) in the late Goryeo period is the author of ≪SamgukYusa≫, which has been steadily read. This article aims to contemplate about the authenticity of his religious aspect, for it was discussed superficially in former studies, and about the values he had pursued of in Buddha land. He lived through the period of severe military rule in 13th century when invasion of Mongol Empire and of Khitan had occurred. At the age of 31, of being appreciated with his monastic practice and devotion, he confronted the invasion of Mongol then dreaded dying. In reflection of his shallow liberation from life and death, he aspired to evacuate and chanted ‘the spell of Manjushri(文殊五字呪)’. He had a responsive experience then was widely awakened. After the enlightenment, he struggled to practice in diligence to free all sentient beings from suffering. His devotion is emerged throughout the work of ≪SamgukYusa≫, and the consequence appears in ‘Gojoseonjo’. His idealism of Buddha land is implemented by Hwan-in(the God of Heavens), Hwan-ung, a bear, and a tiger. Hwan-ung, after a discussion with his father(Hwan-in) to do ‘Humanitarian ideal(弘益人間)’, descended to human world, then became a selfless spiritual leader of all kinds of human race. Sentient beings, who are deficient and unsatisfied with reality, give effort to grow up for self-actualization. Iryeon eagered for the ideal Buddha land where everything is available by harmonizing their wishes. This study is expected to contribute the revaluation of the world that Iryeon had pledged to pray for and of the historic worth of ≪SamgukYusa≫. Awareness and cultivation of personality will be needed for pedagogues, who should comprehend educatees and encourage them to self-actualize, in the 21st century.
