PURPOSE This research has been conducted to discuss how the pain of loss can be the foundation of growth. As guidance for education on coping with loss, the significant roles of enhancing resilience of the bereaved of Korean traditional funeral ritual using ‘Sang-Yeo’(bier) have been discussed.
CONTENTS ‘Sang-Yeo’(bier) has a special role that provides time for gradual healing by allowing the bereaved family to express the immense sorrow they experience immediately after a major tragedy. Korean traditional funeral services using ‘Sang-Yeo’(bier), have two different processes have been the focus of attention. First, it is ‘bin-sang-yeo-nori’, which includes songs with dances and a lot of laughing with humor during the ceremonies. Also, ‘Sang-yeo-sori’, a sad requiem song that connects the dead and the living, makes it possible to relieve the sorrow caused by the loss of a beloved one.
RESULTS The pain of loss can enhance resilience when we can grieve and face it, and finally, this loss can be the foundation for growth. Growth, which is the healing power of the bereaved, is a practice to cherish each other’s life values and restore the dignity of human life.
