주체성(agency)과 관계성(communion)은 개인의 자서전에서 핵심적으로 드러나는 테마이다. 주체성과 관계성에 있어 성차 및 연령차가 발견되는 것은 일반적인 현상이지만, 이러한 인구통계학적 차이가 적응변인간의 관련성에도 영향을 미치는지에 대해서는 잘 알려져 있지 못하다. 1,786명(남성:51%)의 20대에서 50대의 한국인을 대상으로 인생의 전환점(터닝포인트)에 해당되는 사건을 자세히 기술하도록 하였으며, 4가지의 적응변인을 측정하였다. 연구 결과 대체로 여성이 남성에 비해 관계성을 더 많이 언급하기는 하였으나, 성별과 무관하게 주체성과 관계성 모두를 가지는 것이 적응에 있어 유리한 것으로 드러났다. 연령차에 있어서는 40대 이상의 중년기는 특히 자서전에서 관계성을 언급하는 참가자일수록 적응도가 더 높았다. 이러한 결과는 개인의 최적의 적응을 이해하기 위해서는 그의 발달단계를 고려할 필요가 있다는 점을 시사하며, 특히 중년기 이후의 경우 관계성의 역할에 주목할 필요가 있다는 점을 시사하였다.
The concepts of agency and communion have been historically key ingredients in peoples’ autobiographical narratives. Gender and age differences in agency and communion are well known, but whether these demographic differences are also related to psychological adjustment is an empirical question. Autobiographical stories about turning point episodes were obtained from 1,786 Korean adults(male: 51%) between the ages of 20 and 59. They also completed various mental health questionnaires. Results indicated that although it was generally true that females were more communion-oriented than males, having both agency and communion in their narratives were beneficial to mental health regardless of gender. Concerning age differences, communion rather than agency was important for the adjustment of middle-aged participants. The present findings implied that the optimal adjustment may be developmental-dependent, and communion may need particular attention in order to understand the well-being of middle-aged people.
