The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group art therapy utilizing picture books on the happiness of children in a community children’s center. The subjects were third to fifth graders in elementary school attending the S community center located in G city. Among the 12 children who scored low happiness in the pre-test, six children each were randomly assigned to an experimental group and control group. The experimental group received 12 sessions(70 minutes per session, one a week) of a group art therapy program utilizing picture books. In order to analyze the changes in happiness, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was administered. The results of this study are summarized as follows: Group art therapy utilizing picture books positively affected the happiness of children in a community children’s center. Particularly, group art therapy utilizing picture books positively affected self-esteem, friendship, and optimism among the sub-factors of happiness of children. These results suggest that group art therapy utilizing picture books is effective in improving the happiness of children in a community children’s center.
