The purpose of this qualitative case study was examination of how depressive middle-aged women s depression symptoms change through art therapy and how the symbols appearing in the process of individualization change. To this end, an expansion method for interpreting symbols in analytical psychology was applied. A middle-aged woman in her 50s was judged to have an element of depression in the test result. The case was conducted twice a week, 90 minutes per session for a total of 30 sessions from June 1 to September 18, 2018. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Draw A Story (DAS) Test, and Sentence Completion Test (SCT) were used as research tools to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze changes in depression and the process of individualization through symbolic changes in participants’ artwork and dreams during art therapy sessions. The results were as follows; First, all sub-factors of the BDI decreased, and the DAS test indicated that unstable behaviors stemming from depression had changed to positive behaviors. The SCT also showed a resolution of the participant’s emotional conflicts from suppressed anger due to depression. Second, as a result of qualitatively analyzing symbols in each session, the participant became aware of her subconscious personalities and was able to connect to repressed emotions by confronting the negative animus. and the negative maternal complex, the affection, and healing power of the maternal archetype were regained to restore emotional stability and relieve depression. This study was meant to be limited to middle-aged women and has limitations that cannot be generalized. However, it is significant in that it provided basic data through an attempt to help individualize by imagining the message conveyed by the unconscious along the path of dreams as an art medium.
