본 연구는 석사학위 과정에 있는 미술치료 전공생이 치매노인을 위한 미술치료 실습을 하면서 어떤 경험을 하는지 탐구하고, 그 의미와 본질을 밝혀 그들의 경험을 심층적으로 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 Max van Manen의 해석학적 현상학적 연구방법론을 적용하였고, 미술치료를 경험한 6명의 미술치료 전공생을 참여자로 하였다. 자료의 분석 결과 6개의 본질적 주제와 19개의 하위 주제를 도출하였고, 본질적 주제는 다음과 같다. ‘복잡한 마음으로 치매를 진단 받은 노인과의 실습을 준비함’, ‘단단히 준비했음에도 시행착오를 겪어가며 버거워함’, ‘치매노인 미술치료도 서로 주고받는 관계임을 직접 경험함’, ‘미술치료가 치매노인에게 주는 의미를 경험을 통해 발견함’, ‘자기를 탐색하며 자신과 치매노인을 더 이해하고자 함’, ‘치매노인 미술치료의 전문성을 갖춘 미술치료사로서 한 걸음 나아감’ 이다. 이와 같이 미술치료 전공생은 현장과 치매에 대한 깊은 이해의 부족함을 인식하고, 미흡한 부분을 채워나가며 치료사로서의 역량 강화와 개인적인 성찰을 반복하며 성장한다. 본 연구는 미술치료 전공 실습생의 경험을 통해 현장실습이 미술치료 교육에서 중요한 부분이며, 치매노인 미술치료가 전문적이고도 체계적인 접근이 필요함을 확인했다는 것에 의의가 있다.
This study was to see what art therapy majors in the master’s course experienced while practicing art therapy for the elders with dementia, to explain the meanings and essence of their experiences, and to give an in-depth understanding of them. For this study, Max van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenological methodology was applied and data were collected from six participants, who were students majoring art therapy having experienced practicing therapies for the elders with dementia. The data analysis drew a total of 6 themes and 19 sub-themes, and the essential themes were as follows: ‘With perplexed mind, prepared a session with an elderly who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease’, ‘Even though thoroughly prepared, had a hard time because of the mistakes’, ‘Experienced that art therapy treatment of senior with Alzheimer’s disease is also a interacting relationship’, ‘Realized what art therapy treatment means to them’, ‘Tried to understand fully of themselves as well as the diagnosed seniors’, ‘Stepped up a level as an art therapist equipped with professionality dealing with seniors with Alzheimer’s disease’. Students majoring art therapy realized that they lacked a deep understanding of the field and dementia; they made up for the lack and repeated the efforts to improve their competence as a therapist and make self-reflection. This study is significant in that on-site practice is a crucial part of art therapy education and that art therapy for the elders with dementia needs to make a specialized, systematic approach.
