이 연구의 목적은 교직의 전문화(professionalization)에 대한 1990년대 이후의 논의나 관 점의 흐름을 비판적으로 분석하고 교직의 직업 정체성 확립을 위한 새로운 대안을 탐색하 는 것이다. 먼저 교직 전문화 이슈의 등장배경과 특징에 대한 검토에서 시작하여 교직 전 문화 전략들에 내재되어 있는 주요 쟁점과 문제에 대하여 분석하였다. 교직 전문화 전략과 관련하여 가장 비판을 받고 있는 점은 교직의 공적 책무성에 대한 논의가 거의 무시되고 있다는 것이며, 그 결과 교직이 전문직으로서의 사회적 공공성과 신뢰를 얻는 데 실패하고 있다는 것이다. 따라서 교직 정체성 찾기는 교직 자체의 전문화보다는 교직의 공공성을 확 보하는 것에서 새로운 비전과 전망을 구축하는 데 기여해야 하며, 이를 위한 과제가 제시 되었다. 첫째, 교직 전문화는 무엇보다도 공적 영역으로서 교직의 본질과 목적에 대한 재고 에서 출발해야 한다. 둘째, 교직은 공적 관심과 가치에 책무성 있게 대응할 수 있는 실천 적, 참여적 교직으로 재구축되어야 한다. 셋째, 교직은 교사의 권한강화를 넘어서 사회적 자본으로서 교직공동체로 재구성되어야 한다. 결론적으로 교직이 직업 정체성을 확보하려 면, 시장화의 정치학을 넘어선 공공성의 정치학이 교직 전문화의 실천적 기초로 자리해야 함을 강조하였다.
The purpose of this study is to provide a critical discussion on the professionalization of teaching and to reconsider some tasks for the identity of teaching as a profession from an alternative perspective. It begins from an acknowledgment and review of the roots of the professionalization of teaching to the critiques of current policy orientations based on market-driven and technological rationality. I argue that one of the missing in the professionalization of teaching is that there has been little discussion on publicity and the professionalization of teaching without the publicity would fail in the main challenge of public accountability and social trust. For the professionalization of teaching to contribute to establishing the identity of teaching as a profession rather than the professionalization of teaching profession itself, I suggest three strategies are needed. First. we have to reconsider the nature and purpose of teaching profession as a public domain. Second, we must mobilize our teaching activism held firmly accountable for responding to public values and concerns. Third, we must reconstruct teaching community as a social capital beyond teacher empowerment. It is emphasized that politics of publicity beyond marketization of teaching should be the philosophical basis of the professionalization of teaching.
