This study examined degrees of the positive effect of theme-oriented reading
activities on pre-school children's sociality, by selecting fairy tales related to sociality
development subdomains-faithfulness, manner, collaboration spirit, impulsion, restraint,
and regulation, among fairy tales included in the sixth curriculum for kindergartens.
The researcher did reading activities with an experimental group with a theme of
sociality 2 times a week, 30 minutes per time, 15 times in total for 10 weeks from
May fourth to June thirtieth, 2007. Before starting the research, data were collected
twice from pre and post tests for sociality, and based these tests, programs by
stages were set up and operated.
In Chapter 2, the researcher discusses the concept of theme-oriented reading
activities. The activities mean that one does reading activities by organizing
structured programs with selected themes and related reading materials.
In Chapter 3, the researcher applied theme-oriented reading activity program to an
experimental group (male: 6, female: 6) and compared it a control group (male: 6,
female: 6) for pre-school children at the kindergarten for 10 weeks. The contents of
fairy tales were told through oral narration and reading to them, and pictures were
utilized taking their short attention spans into consideration. Overall activities
integrated linguistic activities-reading, writing, listening, and talking and listening and
role play, discussion and drawing. In addition comparing the experimental and control
groups was expressed as pictures and the results were significant indicating changes
in sociality.
In Chapter 4, the researcher summarized conclusions that theme-oriented reading
activities can improve pre-school children's sociality and related suggestions.
