사회변화와 학습자 중심의 교육 패러다임의 변화로 자기 주도적 학습능력이 요청되고 있다. 그 러나 구체적으로 이를 함양하기 위한 방안에 대한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 이에 NIE 경험과 중학 생의 자기 주도적 학습과의 관련성에 대한 조사 연구를 통해 자기 주도적 학습능력 함양을 위한 방안으로서의 NIE의 가능성을 탐색하였다. 연구를 위해 수도권의 중학생 568명을 대상으로 NIE 경험(신문 읽기 경험, 가정 및 학교에서의 NIE 경험)과 자기 주도적 학습능력의 관련성에 대해 조사하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 신문 읽기 경험은 중학생의 자기 주도적 학습능력과 통계적으로 긍정적인 관련성을 나타냈다. 신문 을 매일 읽는 집단과 읽어 온 기간이 긴 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단보다 자기 주도적 학습능력이 높 게 나타났다. 둘째, 가정에서의 NIE 경험은 자기 주도적 학습능력과 통계적으로 긍정적인 관련성 을 나타냈다. 학교에서의 NIE 경험은 몇 개의 하위 요소에서만 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였 다. 한편, NIE 경험 유형과 자기 주도적 학습능력은 고차적인 활동을 한 집단의 자기 주도적 학습 능력이 높게 나타났지만 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보이지는 않았다. 이러한 연구 결과는 자기 주도적 학습능력 함양 방안으로서의 NIE의 가능성을 전반적으로 확인 시켜 주었지만 한편으로는 이를 활성화하는데 필요한 시사점 또한 제공해 준다. NIE 경험과 자기 주도적 학습능력과의 관련성에 대한 특징 및 분석을 통해 자기 주도적 학습능력이 향상되는데 기 여하는 학교 NIE 활동을 개발하고 교사 대상의 연수 프로그램을 마련하는 등 NIE 활동을 위한 제 반 환경을 조성하는 노력이 이루어져야 할 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to explore possibility of NIE for enhancing self-directed learning ability on middle school students. To achieve this aim, First I identified the meaning of Newspaper In Education and self-directed learning ability and examined articles on this theme. Second, I performed a survey about influence of NIE upon Self-directed learning ability. The subjects of this study are 568 of second grade students in the middle schools of capital area. The results are as follows: First of all, it turns out that the more the rates of reading on newspaper of the students are the higher the levels of self-directed learning ability of the students are. Second, the NIE in the home turns out positive effect on self-directed learning ability of the students. The NIE in the school only turns out positive effect on some elements of self-directed learning ability of the students. On the other hand, type of NIE doesn't turn out positive effect on self-directed learning ability of the students both home and school. The results of this study shows possibility of NIE as scheme for self-directed learning ability.
