본 연구는 연인 및 부부 관계 내에서의 헌신에 대한 이론적 배경 및 경험적 연구들을 살펴봄으로써 헌신(commitment)의 의미를 재탐색하고 그 이해를 명확히 하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 대표적인 친밀한 남녀관계인 동거와 결혼관계에의 적용을 통해 개인이 경험하는 헌신이 어떻게 구성되는지, 그러한 헌신이 그들의 관계 내적 경험들 및 관계지속성(relationship stability)과 어떻게 연관되어 있는지 살펴보고, 나아가 우리나라에서 이 헌신이라는 개념이 동거와 결혼을 비교, 이해함에 있어서 어떻게 적용될 수 있을지에 대해 살펴본다. 이러한 목적을 위해 다음과 같은 내용들이 다루어졌다. 먼저 기존의 문헌에서 이제껏 다루어져 온 헌신이라는 개념의 본질적 의미를 살펴보고, 헌신의 본질과 구성을 이해하고 헌신정도의 차이를 분간함에 있어 적용될 수 있는 대표적 이론들(헌신모델들)을 보다 자세히 제시하였으며, 나아가 동거와 결혼관계 간에 존재하는 관계적 결과의 차이들과 그에 대한 헌신의 영향에 대해 탐색하였다. 또한 최근 국내에서 가족에 대한 인식과 가족 형태의 변화를 경험하는 상황에서 가족 연구자와 치료자로서 이러한 헌신과 동거 및 결혼관계에 관련 연구들을 어떻게 실천적으로 활용하고 연구하며 또 어떤 부분들이 정책적으로 고려되어야 할지를 살펴보았다.
Objectives: This paper reviewed the theoretical background of interpersonal commitment and related research to better understand the meaning and implications of the concept, establishing a foundation for its proper use in future research in Korea. Methods: The paper discusses how, in the literature, commitment is conceptually constructed and related to interpersonal experiences and relational outcomes among cohabiting and marital couples and families. The paper also explored the role and function of commitment in intimate relationships. Results: The study 1) provides the nature and definition of interpersonal commitment; 2) discusses two major commitment models that reflect the theoretical structure and characteristics of commitment; 3) examines the differences between cohabiting and marital relationships, related to the role and influence of commitment in the unions; and 4) argues how to properly bring forth and apply the concept of commitment in future research, taking into consideration current trends in marriage and cohabitation in Korea. Conclusion: It is important for family researchers and practitioners to grasp the role and function of commitment in intimate relationships, to be better prepared to support couples and families in the midst of changing attitudes, and to help with forming and conserving secure families.
