This study aimed to examine the effect of the sand-play therapy on the improvement of the
emotional support of the children of alcoholics. To achieve this goal, 12 sessions of sand-play therapy
were conducted for the children of alcoholics. The following is the result of examining their
sand-play therapy progress and changes in their depression, anxiety and self-esteem. First, as the
therapy progressed, the children’s sandtrays expressed more clearly their thirst for care and love,
pleasure and empathy. The number of figures used became more varied and the area of the sand
used became wider. In addition, the children’s facial expressions showing their emotion became more
expressive when having conversation with the the rapist, and they got more articulate and the
volume of their voice became louder. Second, as results of effects of the sand-play therapy on the
depression and anxiety of the children of alcoholics, the depression and anxiety decreased after the
sand-play therapy. This result shows that the sand-play therapy provided the emotional stability by
reducing the elements of the depression and anxiety of the children of alcoholics. Third, as results of
effects of the sand-play therapy on the self-esteem of the children of alcoholics, the self-esteem
increased after the sand-play therapy. This result showed that the sand-play therapy provided the
emotional support by improving the self-esteem of the children of alcoholics.
