본 연구는 상징성이라는 가정을 사용하여 4ㆍ19혁명과 5·16군사혁명의 상징적 의미를 살 펴보았다. 4·19혁명은 국민의 기본권과 국민주권의 기본 원리가 위협받는 위기에서 이에 항 거해 민주주의의 기본정신을 확고히 했다는 매우 중요한 역사적 가치와 상징적 의미를 지닌 다. 5·16군사혁명 또한 4·19 이후 정치·경제·사회적 혼란의 가중에 더해 4·19혁명과정에서 지식인들 사이에 급속히 확산된 친북·종북적 통일운동으로 인한 국가안보의 위기를 막아낸 또 다른 의미의 자유민주주의를 수호한 혁명이었다. 결국 4·19혁명과 5·16군사혁명은 화합 과 포용이라는 긍정적인 관점으로 보았을 때 각각 국민주권의 공고화와 강력한 반공정책을 통한 자유민주주의 수호라는 공통의 의미와 목적을 지녔고, 또 민주주의의 확립을 통한 정 신적 근대화와 군부 중심의 강력한 국가주도 계획경제를 통한 경제적 근대화를 이루었다는 동일성을 찾을 수 있다. 그러나 현재 우리가 알고 있는 것처럼 4·19혁명세대와 5·16군사정 부는 적대적 관계를 이루고 있는 대한민국의 대표적 지도자 그룹이 되어 있다. 여기에는 북 한의 민족공조를 내세운 외세배격이라는 선동과 이를 추종하는 친북·종북세력의 역할이 지 대했다. 그리고 이러한 국론분열의 근본적 원인인 좌·우파의 갈등은 현재까지도 국민통합을 방해하는 고질적인 사회적 병폐가 되었다. 따라서 북한의 대남전략을 정확히 파악해 그들의 남남갈등 전략에 우리가 빠지지 않도록 하는 것은 현재의 우리에게 매우 중요한 문제가 아 닐 수 없다. 이를 위해 남남갈등의 전형을 보여주고 있는 4·19와 5·16을 전후한 북한의 대 남전술과 선동을 특히 유의해 연구할 필요가 있다. 그것은 현재까지도 동일한 메카니즘의 남남갈등과 국론분열이 지속되고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 측면에서 4·19혁명과 5·16군사정부 에 대한 긍정적인 측면의 의미 분석과 오늘날의 대한민국의 번영이 있게 민주화와 근대화의 주춧돌로서의 상징성 부여는 매우 큰 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 또한 이를 통한 4·19혁 명가와 5·16군세력의 화해를 통한 국민통합은 국가존립의 위기상황이라고 해도 과언이 아닌 좌경화된 21세기 대한민국의 절실할 요구임을 분명히 하고자 한다.
This study examined symbolic meaning of 4`19 Revolution and 5`16 Military revolution using a theory of "symbolism". Students and citizens, who led the 4·19 Revolution fought for freedom, justice, and democracy. 4.19 revolution has very important historical value and symbolic meaning in our modern and contemporary history because it had made rights of citizens and the basic principles of national sovereignty of Korean firmly. And 5.16 military revolution, which had occurred at the period of overall confusion, including politics, economy, society after 4.19 revolution, has symbolic meaning in our modern and contemporary history too. Because Republic of Korea had fell into a crisis due to the attack of the unification movement of followers to North Korea, which had been spread rapidly among intellectuals at that time, and it was 5`16 military force that had saved Republic of Korea from collapse of national security by the unification movement in the early 1960’s. If we consider 5.16 and 4.19 in the positive point of harmony and embrace, we can find homogeneous means of each two revolution, as a patron of freedom and democracy. In other words, 4`19 revolution had made the development of democracy in the Republic of Korea through the consolidation of national sovereignty, On the other hand, 5`16 Military revolution also had made the development of democracy of Korea by the strong anti-Communist policy. And also they have in common means on modernization of Republic of Korea. 4`19 revolution led mental modernization by the establishment of democracy, and 5`16 let ROK to has a economical modernization by a powerful military state-led planned economy. More important things is that we have to recognize of roles of followers to North Korea, who had made a lot of problems to using a instigation of ideological confrontation in our country. And the division of public opinion from the conflict between the Left and the Right has been to interfere with the national integration, and this is a inherent social ills. Therefore the positive aspects of semantic analysis of 4.19 revolution and 5.16 military government is necessary to find a way of national integration.
