Since individuals with disabilities become adults, it is expected that they participate in work,
marriage, independent living, leisure activities, and so on like adults without disabilities. Therefore, it is required for them to be self-sufficient in the economical aspect, to have quality residential space and to get support and services in the adult education and leisure life to be involved in and adapted to community.
The status of adults with disabilities shows that individuals with acquired disabilities account
for 89 percent of all population with disabilities, adults with disabilities 93 percent, unemployment rate of adults with disabilities is about 50 percent of all adults with disabilities, and welfare institutions are available to only a few adults with disabilities. In addition, it is shown that regular lifelong education institutions have little content about lifelong education for adults with disabilities and even special lifelong education institutions have few comprehensive policies in education for adults with disabilities.
Considering the importance of lifelong education, adults with disabilities must be provided with
lifelong education, which is stipulated by laws, as community-based education and extension of inclusive education.
Improvement strategies for lifelong education which this study suggests are as follows. First,
support system for lifelong education of adults with disabilities should be established in order
for rights which are stipulated by laws to be guaranteed. Second, community-based educational circumstances should be provided. Third educational condition, in which adults with disabilities can be educated with adults without disabilities in regular lifelong educational institution and which results in inclusion, should be formed.
