7차 교육과정에서 사회과의 역사영역은 국민공통기본 교육과정(7～10학년), 선택중심 교육과정(11～ 12학년)으로 나누어 편제되었는데, 전자의 경우에는 사회과의 통합성이 더욱 요구되었으며, 후자의 경우 에는 학생 중심의 과목선택형 수준별 교육과정이 적용되었다. 이와 같은 사회과 역사영역의 편제는 21세 기 세계화․정보화 시대를 주도할 자율적이고 창의적인 한국인을 육성한다는 제7차 교육과정의 교육목표 와 운영 원칙, 7차 사회과 교육과정의 교육목표와 운영 틀이 그 배경이 되었다. 국민공통기본 교육과정에 서의 역사영역 편제는 특히 10학년(고1)에서 역사교육이 매우 부실하게 이루어질 수밖에 없는 상황이 되었음을 의미하였고, 선택중심 교육과정에서 역사영역이 다시 편제된 것은 그 부족한 역사교육을 보강하 려는 것과 함께 학생이 자기 주도적으로 판단 선택할 수 있는 능력을 신장시키려는 의도였다. 그러나 현실의 여러 측면을 고려해본 결과 학생들이 선택중심 교육과정에서 한국근현대사 와 (또는) 세계사 를 선택할 가능성은 많지 않은데, 이것은 역사교육이 국민공통기본 교육과정에서 끝날 수도 있는 심각한 위기 상황에 처해있음을 의미한다. 결국 7차 교육과정 사회과 역사영역의 편제는 현재 역사교육의 활성화 를 위한 대책 마련이 다른 어느 때보다 절실한 상황임을 보여주고 있다.
The historical part of social studies in the 7th Nation Curriculum has been composed with the National Common Foundational Curriculum(7～10 school years) and Selection Central Curriculum(11～12 school years). And the former has been required the intergrated social studies, the latter has been adapted the student central, selecting a study course Curriculum. This composition of historical part has been based on the objects and the managemental principle of the 7th Nation Curriculum that has had training the autonomial and crative Korean leading the globalization․information period at the 21 century, the objects and the managemental principle of the 7th social studies Curriculum. The composition of this has been meant the untruthfulness at the historical education, especilly 10 school years, re-composition of historical part in Selection Central Curriculum has been intended the supplement at the historical education and the ability-extension of the student central, selecting a study course. But at the result of considering many sides in the actuality, a historical part of social studies in the 7th Nation Curriculum has been meant that the historical education has been sited the serious crisis being ended in the National Common Foundational Curriculum, and so has been required the policy for revival of the historical education.
