영성은 긍정적 청소년개발을 위한 하나의 중요한 구성요소이며 지표로 이해된다. 청소년개발을 위한 영성의 의미를 보다 잘 이해하기 위해 미국의 한 대도시에서 17명의 청소년전문가와 실시한 반구조화된 심층면담을 통해 영성에 대한 개념정의와 중요성을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 청소년개발을 위한 영성의 이점은 다음과 같은 여섯 가지로 이해되었다. 첫째, 영성은 청소년의 긍정적 성과를 위한 하나의 자원이다. 둘째, 영성은 청소년의 정체성 발달에 기여한다. 셋째, 영성은 그 자체가 청소년기의 강점의 하나라는 측면이 있다. 넷째, 영성은 청소년을 지역사회와 연결해준다. 다섯째, 영성은 위기 청소년 을 위해 실천될 필요가 있다. 여섯째, 영성은 특히 청소년의 문제와 위기상황에 대한 치료적 개입으로서 효과적이다. 이 논문은 또한 청소년단체에서의 영성의 민감한 차원에 대해서도 논의하였으며 긍정적 청소년개발을 위한 “영성 민감적 사회복지”의 중요성을 강조하면서 결론을 맺는다.
Spirituality is considered as an important construct and indicator for positive youth development. In order to get a better understanding of the meaning of spirituality for youth development, youth professionals’ definition and significance of spirituality were analyzed based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with 17 participants in a metropolitan area of the USA. The beneficial roles of spirituality for youth development were explored. This includes (1) as a resource for positive outcome; (2) identity development; (3) strengths aspect of adolescents; (4) community connectedness; (5) at-risk youth practice, and (6) therapeutic intervention. Some sensitive dimensions of spirituality in youth-serving organizations are also discussed. This study emphasizes the importance of “spiritually sensitive social work” for positive youth development.
