대학생들의 지역사회 참여와 리더십 자질이 그들의 지역적 그리고 글로벌 수준의 시민의식에 영향을 미치는지를 조사하기 위하여, 청년들의 지역사회 참여와 지역적 글로벌적 시민성의식이라는 연구조사를 실시하였다. 이 연구조사에서는 사회성, 자원봉사활동, 리더십, 지역 이슈와 글로벌 이슈에 대한 관심, 지역시민성, 글로벌시민성과 같은 개념들이 포함되었다. 이 조사에서 사용된 시민성지표the Citizenship Index는 Cronbach’s alpha 점수가 비교적 좋은 .799였고, 소속감, 사회적 신뢰감, 포용성, 사회적 책임성, 민주적 가치관과 관련되는 10개 문항으로 이루어졌다. 전부 16개 항목으로 된 글로벌 시민성지표the Global Citizenship Consciousness는 Cronbach’s alpha 점수가 .763인 것으로 나타났고 그 개념은 다음과 같은 네가지 영역을 포함했다: 1) 글로벌 지역사회에 대한 인식: 2) 다양한 세계 사건들에 대한 관심: 3) 모든 사람들의 인권에 대한 가치관: 그리고 4) 인간 다양성에 대한 존중감, 비록 이 연구조사는 적은 수의 편의샘플을 사용한 등의 방법론적인 취약성이 있지만, 이 논문에 보고된 예비적인preliminary 데이터 분석결과는 변수들간에 통계적으로 유의미한 관계가 있음을 보여 주었다. 응답자들의 지역과 글로벌 이슈들에 대한 관심, 국내와 국외에서의 자발적인 봉사활동, 스스로 인지하고 있는self-perceived 리더십 자질은 지역시민성과 글로벌시민성에 영향을 주었다. 이러한 예비적인 연구 결과에 바탕하여서, 앞으로 한국 대학생들의 시민참여, 리더십 자질, 지역적 그리고 글로벌적인 맥락에서의 시민의식 간의 상관관계에 대한 더 많은 연구 조사를 할 필요가 있다.
To examine whether university students’ community involvement and their leadership qualities influence their consciousness as citizens at the local and the global levels, the author conducted a Survey on Youths’ Community Engagement and their Consciousness of Local and Global Citizenship. The study covered the concepts of sociability, voluntary activities, leadership, interest in local and global issues, local citizenship, and global citizenship. The Citizenship Index consisted of 10 questions relating to a sense of belongingness: social trust: social inclusion: social responsibility: and democratic values. The Citizenship Index showed a Cronbach’s alpha score of .799. The 16-item Global Citizenship Consciousness (GCC) index, with a Cronbach’s alpha score of .763. had four dimensions of the concept: 1) awareness of global community: 2) interest in diverse world affairs: 3) values on human rights of all people, and 4) respect for human diversity. Although this study has methodological limitations because it utilized cross-sectional data obtained from a small convenience sample, the preliminary data analyses revealed meaningful and statistically significant relationships between the variables. The respondents’ interest in local and global issues, domestic and overseas voluntary activities, self-perceived leadership qualities influenced their local and global citizenship scores. Based on these preliminary study outcomes, further studies are needed to examine the relationships between university students’ civic engagement, leadership qualities, and their citizenship consciousness in local and global contexts.
