The Purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Mandala Associative Drawing for reducing
depression and anxiety of a middle aged woman. The subject for this study was a 50-year-old housewife,
this program lasted from March, 2012 to June, once a week for 10 sessions at A art therapy institute. First,
BDI(Beck Depression Inventory) and STAI(State Trait Anxiety Inventory) used in the preliminary, middle,
subsequent and follow-up of the program were compared and analyzed to verify depression and anxiety.
Second, Mandala and Associative Drawing were analyzed and compared on every single session. Third, the
degree of depression and anxiety in the subject' words and deeds showed throughout the art therapy
process analyzed and compared, and the attitude of the art therapist were analyzed. The conclusion of this
study are as follows; First, there were the positive change on BDI and STAI scores. Second, there were the
positive results from the insecure and anxious attitudes to peaceful, joyful, secure, receptive, goal-oriented
and autonomous attitudes on formal scales and contents scales as drawing analysis criterion. Third, the
attitudes of anxiety, guilty, compliant, depression were reduced, the comprehensive, receptive attitudes,
concentrating on her art works and not repressive but expressive attitudes were increased on the art
therapy process. there were positive changes for reducing depression and anxiety by continuous sincerity,
receptive respect, and empathetic understanding of the art therapist internalized to the client. Mandala
Associative Drawing was effective on the middle aged woman. It is the proposal that Mandala Associative
Drawing will be applied on diverse variables to generalize and continuous study.
