The purpose of this study is to develope teaching strategies for Debussy's 『Prelude to the Afternoon of Faun』. Debussy is generally regarded as the creator of impressionism, an artistic movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. His musical background and works have been correlated with contemporary arts-Symbolism in literature and Impressionism in painting. Debussy's most celebrated orchestral work, 『Prelude to the Afternoon of Faun』 is an important landmark of 20th century music. This work is described as a very free illustration of the beautiful poem of Mallarme which describes the desires and dreams of the faun in the heat of this afternoon. Then tired of pursuing the fearful flight of the nymph and naiads, he succumbs to intoxicating sleep, in which he can finally realize his dreams of possession in universal nature. In order for students to comprehend the impression music, 『Prelude to the Afternoon of Faun』, they should be able to 1. Compare impressionist paintings and symbolist's poems with this music. 2. Identify the main theme presented in the flute and the whole-tone scale used in the main theme. 3. Comprehend the work's most striking feature, timber of an expressive and decorative instrument, and tone color of musical structure. 4. Analyze variations of the main melody which is the primary element in Debussy's style. 5. Discuss the characteristics of this music focusing on form, dynamic and orchestration. 6. Write their own poems or short stories and compose one-part form music using wholetone scale.
