The purpose of this study is to examine the educational values of handbells, handchimes,
and boomwhackers; and to search for teaching plans for musical instruments using them
focused on the 5th and 6th grades of elementary school.
The educational value of handbells, handchimes, and boomwhackers are many. First,
students can actively participate in music classes, regardless of their current musical ability
because these musical instruments are easy to learn and fun to use. Second, they are very
effective in teaching chords and scales. Students can feel the harmony and experience social
interaction through real tune activities by playing in informal concerts using these musical
instruments. Third, students can begin to understand to the processes of music in a step-by-step
manner. They feel responsible for their parts in a performance using handbells, handchimes,
and boomwhackers. Responsibility like this raises participation in music classes.
In this study of the use of handbells, handchimes, and boomwhackers, teaching methods were
divided into five categories. The first category focused on finding the characteristics and the methods
of using these instruments to produce simple tones in groups. The second category integrated the
instruments with singing. In this situation, the students played the scales and melodies of songs in
partnership. The third category focused on understanding the concepts of music. Students studied the
three main chords and played these in a concert and played an accompaniment in chords. The fourth
category was for playing in concert using the handbells, handchimes, and boomwhackers with other
instruments according as the special qualities or tone colors of musical instruments. The fifth
category focused on composing. Students composed melodies based on chords through cooperative
activities, and played the created melodies in partnership.
