The purpose of this paper is to analyze the expression system of television audio
description in Korea and to provide some agenda for improving its quality, which can
lead to strengthen the media accessibility of blind and visually impaired people.
Documentary and drama were analyzed according to the harmony and coherence
between video and audio in original and narration in audio description at the level of
sequence. As a result, it is found that there is some difference between documentary
and drama in expression system of audio description. While drama is flexible in
dealing with situation in somewhat subjective form, documentary tends to observe the
rule of objectivity. How to convey complex plot and foreshadowing, metaphor and
symbolic expression in drama into audio description can be a very difficult task. On
the contrary, documentaries have to try to achieve combination of narration, subtitle
and sound in original and audio description for the best works. The problematic
relationship between description and narration, that is to say, how to maintain the
equilibrium between objectivity and subjectivity will be one of the important tasks in
audio description.
