The purposes of this study were to examine the relationships between stress and school adjustment of
adolescents with multicultural family background and suggest alternatives that they can grow up to be a
healthy member of society by forming correct ego-identity without any wastage caused by school maladjustment.
308 adolescents with multicultural family background and non-multicultural family background in 15 middle
schools located in central area of Gyeonggi-do were randomly sampled and asked to respond to questionnaire.
There was a significant difference between adolescents with multicultural family background and nonmulticultural
family background in stress sub-factors; stress related to family background, stress related to friends
and stress related to teachers and school life. And, There was a significant difference between adolescents with
multicultural family background and non-multicultural family background in school adjustment sub-factors; school
interests and school norms. On the other hand, there was no significant difference statistically between two
groups in learning attitude. The correlation between stress and school adjustment of adolescents with
multicultural family background was analyzed. As the result, all of stress sub-factors showed significant negative
relation with school adjustment sub-factors. In other words, it means, the higher stress is, the lower standard of
school adjustment is. And, stress of family background and stress of teachers and school showed significant
negative relation with school interests and school norms, and stress of family background showed significant
negative relation for learning attitude. Based on the above results of study, the creation of desirable school
culture was discussed for inducing correct perception for school maladjustment of adolescents with multicultural
family background and preventing them from feeling left behind school life or wastage. In addition, the
necessity to improve human relations and provide multicultural education was implied for school adjustment of
adolescents with multicultural family background.
