While content externalism concerns the type of mental states, the extended mind can be regarded as a thesis about the token, realization of mental states. The main goal of this paper is to investigate possible relations between these two kinds of externalism by discussing Otto's case, Clark's notion of "scattered cause" and Wilson's argument for token externalism. Especially, does the extended mind have an implication on the problem of mental causation that plagues content externalism? Since beliefs and other intentional states are included in the list of what can be extended, one might expect that the extended mind can resolve the problem of mental causation and thus make a valuable contribution to the philosophy of mind. But the conclusion of this paper is that such expectation is premature and it is entirely unclear whether the extended mind sheds a new light on the realm of the mental marked by intentionality.
