As one of major contemporary philosophical currents, analytic philosophy relies upon such methods as "linguistic analysis", and reflects "scientific spirit", the spirit of the time. Philosophically, it has initiated the so-called "linguistic turn", which may well be compared with other two major changes in the history of philosophy, the Platonic "existential turn"and the Cartesian "epistemic turn" on the one hand, moreover historically' it has proved to be the embodiment of the scientific spirit by means of engaging the philosophical investigations on the scientific inquiry and the nature of scientific knowledge. Analytic philosophy, however, has experienced radical changes and confronted with the problem of identity, mainly due to the later Wittgensteinian conception of language and the Kuhnian historicist's view of science. Such changes have eventually resulted in its transformation into "post-analytic philosophy". At the present moment, it is difficult to predict what analytic philosophywoud be like in the future, although R. Rorty and H. Putnam have played leading roles in finding the neo-pragmatic way out of living ever since D. Davidson had revived the Kantian stance. In any case, it is quite certain that analytic philosophy would successfully accomplish its historical mission as one of the contemporary philosophical currents in realizing the scientific spirit by maximizing the Popperian notion of critical rationality.
