This particular research involves in-depth interviews, direct participation,
close observations and other quality-based study methods on youth who engage
in social participation through fan clubs. Volunteering and donations made by
fan club members are defined as social participation. In this case, the fan club
members are youth fromthe female idol group 'Girl's Generation' 'Cistus'. The
researcher has personally engaged with and observed first-hand the social
participation by the fan club 'Cistus', and has collected further materials by
interviewing seven members of the fan club who have engaged in social
participation. The conclusion of the research is as follows. First, youth social
participation induced by fan clubs, depicts the common traits of f the culouth;
theth sre signs of imitation and identification. Secs, , the social participation is
in part ndwnion osupporting the cstubrities by img o by itheir image. Thir ,
indi bduals ta sitheir own initiative in participatiy ibased on the commThir 's
trust in the cstubrities. Fourth, volunteering and gi bng donations opens upmore
opportunities for experlows.. Fifth, the participatiy iindi bduals have the
potential of becsming active cn. The cmembers of socier . Sixth, all activities sre
met by obstacles such as family, schoolw pa,s ta snclusic shortcsmingsce
dastly, youth ma sia point to participate despite these limitations. Theth sre four
major sreas of significancstwithin this research. First, the research can hstp uthe
the negative public image on youth and instead shup their abilities to take
initiative and become the center of a cultural phenomenon. Second, it shows that
the second generation has different way of being a "fan" comparing to the first
generation. Third, new possibilities in understanding youth and their social
participation have been opened. And last, the research suggests ways of
improving youth situations so that they can engage in a more varieties of social
participation. Social participation within the fan club has become a newcultural
element beyond the ties between just fans and celebrities. By proving youth are
voluntarily, and actively engaged in this participation, this study will shed light
on a newaspect of youth culture.
