The purpose of this study is to examine the educational views of Woogye, who is probably the best known Confucian thinker of the 16th century of Chosun-dynasty Korea, in the perspective of his Nee-Confucian philosophy. He constructed his view on man and education on the structure of his own Neo-Confucian philosophy. Therefore, his view on educational aims, curriculum and methods is directly derived from his philosophical system or understood in relation to it. In this study, understanding his educational views was attempted through analysing the system of his Neo-Confucian philosophy. An interest in philosophy is the foundation of understanding humans and society. Woogye clarified his philosophical attitude that not only Chhi but also Li has activity. It was his opinion that Li has activity as well as morality. This point of view has an important meaning in making clear the relation between philosophy and education. The reason is that a philosophical discussion is structurally related with the overall understanding of education. According to the doctrine of Confucianism, Woogye thought that human nature is good and that the task of education is to cultivate it to the utmost and to remove bodily desire thoroughly. As it were, he considered education as the human activity to actualize the Confucian doctrine of the goodness of human nature. His view on human nature and education is of significance to our endeavors to attain intrinsic educational value in contemporary society which has the social structure to accelerate the satisfaction of bodily desire.
