The purpose of this study was to investigate the desirable direction of computer education for young children in Korea. Appropriateness of the use of microcomputer in early childhood education was debated seriously in the developmental aspect about a decade ago in U.S. Most research suggested that the quality of software and the role of teacher play important roles in the computer education for young children. This study examined the changing perspectives of developmental approriateness and explored the desirable direction of computer education for young children in Korea under the subject of the curriculum, the learnning and instruction method, and the teacher's role. This study discussed the appropriateness of the use of microcomputer for young children extensively including three different dimensions-developmental, cultural, and knowledge dimension. This investigation suggested that 4 types of educational software-educational game, discovery software, Logo, and replyable software-integrate into early childhood curriculum for children to internalize higher intellectual process through collaborative learning. Teacher needs to be a cultural constructor in this social context.
