The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of high-performing high schools
through analyzing two high school cases. For a better understanding of the effective factors in
high-performing high schools, two representative cases of high-performing high schools from two
different regions were selected and contrasted and compared similarities and differences of the
cases. Various research methods such as document analysis, group meetings with principals and
teachers, classroom observations, and in-depth interviews with class teachers and students were
adopted. A qualitative approach was applied for the data analysis. In results, School A indicated
tailored curriculum according to students' performance, balance between students' empowered
rivalry culture and good friendships, teachers' passion, flexible teaching methods for different level
classes, and teaching methods for students' understanding rather than knowledge delivery. School
B indicated reading, discussion, and essay curriculum for enhancing students' creativities, mutual
respect and sharing culture of teachers and students, students' trust for teachers' responsibilities,
teaching methods for students' understanding, and effective utilization of extra-curriculum
activities such as lesson diary and mentoring. In conclusion, the characteristics of the
high-performing high schools includes implementing the curriculum tailored to school context and
student characteristics, teaching based on students' understanding, and constructing the culture of
trust and sharing between school members including students, teachers, and principals.
