This paper was an attempt to make a theoretical suggestion about a model of a person's career socialization mainly during his adolescence on the basis of pertinent literature and related research, and to discuss its educational sociological implications. Career socialization is defined in this paper as the process of a person's exploring, choosing, and changing his career as the result of the interaction between the individual and the familial, educational, societal, and socio-economic environments. In other words, an individual's career socialization is equal to the formation process of his career maturity including his career aspirations in the context of the interaction between the individual attributes and exterior surroundings. A model of an person's career socialization process suggested in this paper is summarized as follows: 1. It comprises an individual's formation process of career maturity focused on the aspects of career development and of career aspiration related to the social prestige level of aspired occupations. 2. Career maturity is composed of aspects of career choice content and career choice process; in turn, content aspect is concerned with consistency and realism in career choice, and process aspect is related to competencies and attitudes in terms of career choice. 3. Career aspiration includes educational and occupational aspirations, each of which comprises realistic aspect and idealistic aspect with the time-dimension of short-term and long-term considered simultaneously. 4. Career maturity and career aspiration are assumed to show reciprocal relationship in the process of career socialization. In discussing educational sociological implications of the model suggested, two points emerged. First, career-related behavior is the result of a complex interaction of individual components, social psychological process, and social structural factors. Second, elements beyond an individual's control are assumed to affect career-related behavior. Social class background can be a major factor in the process of an individual's career socialization. That is, people are likely to be steered by socioeconomic factors toward career roles that are generally consistent with their social class through differential career socialization process both at home and in schooling. Another major element beyond the individual's control can be degreeocracy or credentialism which is so prevalent in our present society. Thus it is discussed that degreeocracy has a negative impact on the process of an individual's career socialization with its ideological characteristic focused generally on the attainment of prestigious professions, not considering the individual's capability and interests. In conclusion, this paper raises the necessity of career education and related research in our educational settings.
