Hongik Ingan (The greatest service for the benefit of humanity) is regarded as a means of the national spirit of our Korean foundation. Tangun, our country progenitor, laid the foundation for all our mutual prosperity with the holy spirit. The thought of Hongik Ingan involved the spirit of contribution to respect and peace for mankind. It means, in other words, the spirit of the greatest service for the human race. The spirit of Hongik Ingan, therefore, has been the ideal of education in our Korea since the World War Ⅱ, and finally it has been the symbol of all education. Ⅰdescribed in Chapter Ⅳ some stressed on its validity, others have some critical opinions about it. The former chiefly asserted that it has the spirit of national foundation, the racial ideal, the world wide ideal, or humanism, while the critical opponents asserted that it was regarded as a kind of myth or an ancient document because of its unrealistic thought, a rather fantasic idea, undemocratic theory. But they haven't made any counterproposal as setting-up a new desirable educational ideal to Hongik Ingan. Now I'm going to describe the validity of Hongik Ingan with three different points of view through the. previous description about Hongik Ingan. First, Hongik Ingan is not only the spirit of our national foundation, but also our racial belief and ideal. I think, therefore, our racial feelings can't exclude the argument about Hongik Ingan intentionally except the educational and racial ideal. I'm going to assert my opinion that Hongik Ingan should be an ultimate goal of our Korean education, at the same time, we should succeed to its spirit for a long time to corne. Second, Hongik Ingan as a ideal of education stands for "To be a true haman being who has sound humanity," because it is an essentials in education to make. up the true human being. Hongik Ingan is not only our racial ideal, but also its spirit agrees on the world ideal which coincides with devotion for all people who live in the earth. The aims of education are not only for the educated person, but also it must be for all neighbors or for coexistence. Hongik Ingan is valuable as a view of democratic or universal education. In these view points, the aims of education in Korea has not been set up wrong for 23 years. We should have tried to realize our ideals through the spirit of Hongik Ingan. If we had tried to realize the spirit of Hongik Ingan, our educational effect would have more developed unquestionablly.
