This article attempted to formulate the causes of dropping-out from colleges and give some recommendations on how to prevent it. 1. Causes of Dropping-Out from Colleges The causes of dropping-out from colleges can be generally found in the following factors : the individual factors, the characteristics of college, and the social integration. ⑴ The Individual Factors The intellectual ability, especially the scholastic aptitude is the one. It is a primary abillity to meet academic needs related to dropping-out in college situation. The affective traits are the others. Affective traits like impulsiveness, lack of emtional commitment to school learning, rigidity in dealing with changing school situations, overactive personality, oversensitivity, egoitism, etc. can be related to the dropping-out. The third individual factor is the students' aspiration which is explained as their future educational and career expectations and planning. In addition, the family background can be also a reason of the dropping-out. ⑵ The Characteristics of College The characteristics of college related to dropping-out are its quality level, location, and admission period. The quality level of college is comprised of the qualities of teacher and student ratio, scholarship, financial and administrative supports. campus, educational facilities, etc. In the colleges which achieved high levels of quality in the above aspects, the students with high level of academic achievement and aspiration will apply competitively. They generally have a trend to complete their degrees. College location and admission period are also re lated to dropping-out. College applicants tend to prefer the colleges located in Seoul area rather than the other areas. And the students admitted in the colleges of second period of admission tend to give up schooling in their colleges in order to reapply the colleges in which they failed in their first trial. ⑶ The Social Integration Social integration means phenomenon that a person adapts to his society without conflict. The social integration for a student largely depends upon his/her various social interactions with his/her peers, faculty members, and administrative staffs. If the students fail in those social interactions, they will also fail in social integration which may bring their own dropping-out. 2. How to Prevent Dropping-Out Some general principles and exemplary activities to prevent dropping-out will be presented here. ⑴ General Principles to Prevent Dropping-Out The following are largely based on the principles presented by Tinto(l987). First, faculty members and administrative staffs should have great concerns on the seriousness of dropping-out which may bring difficulties to the dropouts themselves and their family and colleges. Second, the college should check its students' entry characteristics such as academic, socio-economic, and personality backgrounds and make corresponding efforts to the possibly checked troubles. Third, the college should make efforts for its students to have the experiences of various informal interactions as well as academic and formal interactions. Fourth, the college should start the efforts to prevent dropping-out as soon as possible and continue until the students obtain their degrees. Fifth, the activities that the college tries should be not only for preventing dropping-out itself but also for providing desirable education for all the students. ⑵ Exemplary Activities for Preventing Dropping-Out Several exemplary activities for preventing Dropping-out can be presented as follows. The advertisement for introducing the college to the applicants should be fully detailed and exact in order that they are able to avoid misunderstanding on the college which can be a reason of dropping-out, In the session of orientation for freshmen, the college should provide the information needed in academic requirement and social integration for persisting their schooling. In addition, it is also important to try to motivate the students with acdemic and social activities in the orientation session. The first one year of college is most frequent period of dropping-out. Therefore, the college should particularly make efforts to prevent dropping-out in this one year period. Those efforts can be, for instances, implementing remedial learning programs for the academic disadvantaged students, encouraging formal and informal interactions among peer students, faculty members, and administrative staffs and providing the opportunities of professional counselling and advising. Furthermore, it is important that the efforts to prevent dropping-out should not be stopped until the students obtain their degrees.
