A teacher is a core factor to guide and decide the direction of education. Accordingly a teacher is entrusted with an important mission to realize the ideal of education. The ultimate ideal or purpose of education is "The Completion of Character" and "Building a Utopia". Therefore a teacher must have special quality and duties as a "Character Builder" and as a pioneer of "'Building a Utopia". Modern teachers, however, lack the profound recognition of educational ideal. They are degrading, to tradesmen of knowledge. Educatioanal zeal has become no more than euphuistic phrases to decorate • the pedagogic 'books, and stays within the limit of self-assertion. To solve the problems of modern teachers, and to establish ideal image of a teacher, there must be diversified approach. As a way to that approach, this thesis is a study of Buddhistic view of a teacher. The present 'writer tried to establish a new ideal view of teachers in this study. From the macroscopic viewpoint, Buddhistic view of a teacher is on the fundamental basis of Wisdom and Benevolence out of self-renunciation, and the microscopic viewpoints on the above basis are as the following: 1. A teacher in Buddhistic view through Good Knowledge (Kalyanamitra) 1) makes a man of character with wisdom and benevolence an accompanist and a teacher of life; 2) respects teachers and plays a role as a teacher of mankind with unselfish Great Benevolence; 3) does external protion, practicing together; and has ability, method, and practice of teaching; 4) is a companion, fellow practicer, and teacher of all mankind. 2. A teacher in Buddhistic view through eighteen special faculties of Buddha 1) is correctly conscious of the real of the universe, knows his own and the other's present and future, understands the actual condition of nature; 2) lives bravely with faith and self-confidence; 3) keeps, on the spot of education, stable mind in any case without being agitated; 4) has benevolence and compassion, which appear naturally from self-renunciation. 3. A teacher in Buddhistic view through Six: Paramita of Bodhisattva 1) is the eternal seeker after truth who pushes forward ceaselesly to the great ideal in his mind; 2) understands that the ideal is the happiness of mankind and his own completion of character; 3) is an eternal practician of Great Benevolence and self education; 4) is faithful to self-sacrificing altruism, self-restraining duty, tolerance and perseverance; 5) practices and experiences determined intrepid spirit, diligence, spiritual stability and enlightenment. 4. A teacher in BuddhistiC view through the other discussed ideas 1) is aware of the fact that the ultimate goal of life is the Completion of Character through self-consciousness and Building a Utopia through the Completion of Character; 2) has infinite confidence in possibility of progress of man; 3) believes the equality of mankind; 4) understands the importance of correlation, and surmounts self-righteous attitude; 5) develops a benevolent life in which the whole creation is regarded in the same light; 6) experiences nature as an object of love, not of conquest. The above mentioned Buddhistic view of a teacher, the present writer believes, is the eternal images of teachers; and this Buddhistic view of a teacher gives, as was examined in this thesis, an answer to the problems of today's teachers. To establish an ideal view of a teacher, many suggestions of idea will be obtained from Buddhistic view of a teacher.
