The goal of this research is to employ meta-analysis to an integration of the results of
the effects of Korean traditional music in domestic music therapy/activities, and to
analyze comparatively the average of effect size for each variable which can influence
therapeutic effects. For this, Subject was carried out from 2000-2012 using
meta-analysis, focusing on 39 experimental research studies applying Korean traditional
music as an independent variable, selected from over 39 music research-related Masters
and Doctoral theses located in the National Assembly Library, the National Central
Library and RISS. A Meta-analysis was performed by using the Effect size
determination programs to transform the study result into effect size which is common
measure. We yielded total 70 effect size from papers and used SPSS 13.0 for Window.
The results indicated that the overall mean effect size was found to be 1.16, indicating
that music therapy was highly effective in overall. Second, the subjects were classified
according to the symptoms and signs of age. When they were compared by the
symptoms, the effect size of general public was found to be most effective(ES=1.31).
When they were compared by the clients’ age, the effect size of elementary school
students were found to be most effective(ES=1.47). Third, when they were compared by
their programs, effect size of music therapy programs including non-musical activities
in every session was larger than the effect size of music activities. however, there was
no statistically significant difference. Fourth, when they were compared by traditional
musical variables, the effect size of the tune utilizing variables for the study was
larger(ES=1.23) than the effect size of using folk songs most small(ES=0.66). Finally,
when music therapy programs were compared by their dependent variable, programs
focusing on social skills in clients were found to be most effective (ES=1.80), there was
statistically significant differences.
