Systems theory, as a paradigm, is an emerging new idea in the fields of social science including study in education. The purpose of this paper is to introduce systems theory as a new framework in curriculum development and educational research. In systems paradigm, all aspects of students and their environments are considered potentially important in student learning. Systems analysis is a useful framework to analyze learner environments and learner culture to find out the needs, interest, and the best way to deliver instruction. Through thorough analysis of learner systems, curriculum designer may find previously overlooked needs and interests of the students. Systems theory can provide new perspectives on how and what to look for in education research. By understanding this complexity, researchers can start to look for factors around the problem that have been previously overlooked. Systems approach also affects the design of a research. The researcher views learning as a complex phenomenon, which involves both cognitive and social activities, and only through the multiple lenses to see the complex, the phenomenon could be understood. In a constantly changing and complex world as today, systems theory can provide the researchers in education with a fresh perspective on who the learners are and how they learn.
