At CRESST we use the terms 21st Century Skills and Cognitive Readiness as relatively
interchangeable. The term 21st Century Skills is used in the civilian sector and the term Cognitive
Readiness is used in the U.S. military sector. The purpose of the study was to access the cognitive
readiness (A.K.A. 21st Century Skills) of sailors who would be using the Multi-Mission Team
Trainer. The Multi-Mission Team Trainer was adopted as the simulator due to its feasibility.
Cognitive readiness is defined as the mental preparation and individual needs to establish and
sustain competent performance in the complex and unpredictable environment (e.g. modern
military operations) (Fletcher, 2004).
