본 연구는 서울과 경기지역의 초등학교에 재학 중인 4~6학년 아동 683명(남아 354명||| 여아 329명)을 대상으로 아동의 자아개념 및 다문화 경험과 다문화 수용성과의 관계를 자기보고식 설문조사를 통해 조사하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째||| 일반 가정 아동의 다문화 수용성 정도는 비교적 높 은 수준이었다. 둘째||| 여아가 남아에 비해 다문화 수용성 정도가 높았고||| 학년에 따른 차이는 없었다. 셋째||| 아동의 자아개념 수준이 높을수록 다문화 수용성 수준이 높았으며||| 특히 인성적 자아||| 사회적 자아||| 학업적 자아와 다문화 수용성 간의 상관이 높았다. 넷째||| 초등학생의 다문화 경험은 다문화 수 용성과 상관이 없었으나||| 각 변인의 하위영역에 있어서 다문화 교육 경험은 다문화적 관계형성능력 및 다문화적 인식과 유의한 상관이 있었다. 결론적으로 본 연구결과에 기초해 볼 때 아동의 자아개념 이 다문화적 관계형성능력||| 다문화적 인식||| 다문화적 개방성||| 다문화적 공감 등 다문화 수용성과 관련 이 있다고 할 수 있다.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among children’s self-concept||| cross-cultural experiences||| and multicultural acceptance. Methods: The participants in this study were elementary school students (354 male and 329 female) in 4th through 6th grade in Seoul and Kyunggi-do. The researchers used Pearson correlations to analyze the relationships among children’s self-concept||| cross-cultural experiences||| and multicultural acceptance. Results: The researchers found a statistically significant positive correlation between total self-concept and total multicultural acceptance. In particular||| the personal||| social||| and academic dimensions of self-concept were significantly highly correlated with multicultural acceptance. There was not a statistically significant relationship between the participants’ total cross-cultural experience and their total multicultural acceptance. However||| the researchers found a significant relationship between participants’ multicultural education experience and their competence in multicultural relations and multicultural awareness. Conclusions: These findings indicate that children’s self-concept influences their multicultural acceptance in all sub-factors: multicultural awareness||| multicultural empathy||| competence in multicultural relations||| and multicultural openness.
