This article explores local and regional communities in the museum context, which is becoming increasingly important in times of globalisation and regionalisation. Museurns may reflect the nature of their communities in their presentations, engendering pride and providing inspiration. This will be discussed with reference to the new museology movement, which emphasises community development by forging and enhancing a sense of identity. New museology embodies new approaches, new notions and new concepts, empowering local people, broadening the role of conventional museurns, and creating new models for museums. Regionalisation or localisation happening in many parts of the world has coincided with a new wave in the museum world, the appearance of community-centred musewTlS throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The new breed of museums may be distinguished from conventional museums with three main points of comparison, building - territory, collections - heritage, public - population. More exactly, this museum could be described as a cultural process, identified with a local community (population), on a specific territory, using the common heritage as a resource for development, as opposed to the more classical museum, an institution characterised by a collection, in a building, for a public of visitors Local history provides people with the opportunity to distinguish their communities with memories that are individual and unique to that place of natural and human-made features. 1t explains a place both to the people who live there and to those who visit, providing a sense of security. Thus museums may be one of the foremost facilities to express these links. Now, the criteria of collection and display have shiftecl from aesthetics to the everyday lives of ordinary people and from an object-oriented to a context-oriented approach. In other words, the conventional traditions focusing on individual, isolated objects is giving way to an attention to the story behind the objects , to the people who used them and what they did with them. On a smaller scale, most localities or regions have their own museums, memorial monuments or historic sites for the memory of local or regional events and people, which may be a symbol of a spec?fic identity of the locality. These institutions or sites could increase cultural and historical understanding and awareness, enhancing people' s attention and interests in their regions and giving them pride. As the focus of the exhibition has been shifted from the object-centred to concept-centred, collecting memories appears to be invaluable to provide the meaning for objects. The past, usually understood as an accumulation of objects whatever natur따 or man-made relics of time, cannot be restricted only to something tangible. The use of oral history in museums contributes to the recognition of the importance of intangible cultural heritage, bringing a new dimension to exhibitions previously bounded by tangible material culture. The rich collective human experience includes beliefs, traditions, customs, social structures ,activities, skills and ways of behaviour prevalent in the area. This may be a powerful legacy to revive people' s consciousness and awareness of their heritage.
