The purpose of this thesis is to research considerations concerning building the network which
museums share the information about their collections through, focused on analysing the foreign
cases to share collections information of museums via internet. The networks analysed and
compared are CHIN from Canada, MCN, CIMI Consortium, Getty Research Institute, MOAC,
and AMICO from USA, and MDA from UK, according to their backgrounds, histories, and
characters.
As a result, I found out several details considered as major requirements in building the effective
museum network.
First of all, developing and spreading standards is important. Standards give the rules for
structuring information, so that the data entered into a system can be reliably read, sorted,
indexed, retrieved, and communicated between systems, protecting the long-term value of data.
Standards conceming the museum network are Information system standards, Data Standards,
Procedural Standards, and Information interchange standards.
Second, managing copyright is also a significant matter. Digital information of the museum
collections is easily saved, played, transmitted, copied, processed, or accessed without damaging
the original. The copyright, therefore, is more important in the online circumstances. The
collective copyright management is considered as a suitable model for museums in the studies
from major museum networks in the world.
Third, supplying educational resources is important for the museum network. As laying emphasis on educational role of modem museums, collections management in museums has also changed
from focusing effective management into stressing education. The education through the museum
network can be divided into professional and public education. Nowadays, they are built on two
networks respectively. It is necessary to try to make our museum network supply rich educational
resources.
Fourth, developing digitalization technologies is a basic matter for building the museum network.
More professionals and tools are needed for managing museum information through the interent
museum networks.
Fifth, museums have to be linked with one another through the network. Intemet can make it
easier to meet and debate irrespective of time and space.
