Nowadays a museum that serves as exhibit space has shown the tremendous
expansion. For this reason, our country has arranged and operated the museum
professional, called 'curator' qua1ification system from 2001 in order to administrate
and manage museum more efficiently, but some problems have occurred recently.
Those working in Korean museums are called as museum manpower or museum
professional and curator in the general terms. But many people limit curator as a
research worker who concentrates on investigation affairs. On this account, a
curator can't play an intermediary role in museum administration and
management, even though the curator takes charge of the essential roles relating to
museum adminstration , so to speak , acquisition , conservation , research ,
communication, exhibition and education.
From this viewpoint , this report is designed to observe the problems of
qualification system and look into improvement plans. And this report tries to find
proper supports and application plans to make the curator qualification system
better. We implemented a fact-finding survey on 258 museums as research subjects.
The survey was focused on finding how well they have been managed in terms of
adminstration and manpower.
We hope that the result of this research will present future roles and directions by
recommending possible reform measures to fix concerned problems facing the
current curator qualification system. And we expect that more researches and
investigations will be available to turn our attention to issues like how to make the
use of professionals than curator qualification system itself.
