The National Science Museum has been conducting missions of collection and preservation of over one million natural history objects including fishes, insects, spiders, reptiles, crustacean, birds, mammals, plants, Mineral, fossils, and others. In the past Card-Index System have used for the collection management as a source research, education, exhibition and so on. But it have had many difficulty to manage and make full use of its data as our objects number increasing. For instance. time consuming(or duration) have became chronic and would likely worsen. So we have traded in our old ideas from Card-Index System to New Systematic Collection Management and Utilization System with vistas of the future. The master plan for it has been accomplished since 2004, and we named it to Korean Natural History Research Information System(hereafter NARIS). Korean NARIS was firstly designed to build up a database of the museums' s collections to meet international standards recommended the International Committee of Museum and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. Korean NARIS had organized 476,302 data of the museums objects, related museums and organizations. Moreover. Korean NARIS has inaugurated Internet Portal Services for public. Its portal site was mainly made up Korean Natural Information. Total Advanced Search System. International Standards Management. Virtual Natural Exhibition Hall and it was linked to the web-site of Global Biodiversity Information Facility. seven Natural History Museums in Korea and other related organizations. Through introduction of new Systematic Collection Management System, NARIS. it is possible to more easily manage and utmost use of the collections information than the old method. Of course. the information contained in a data bank of Korean NARIS are tangible property of Korea and moreover everyone who accesses its portal site can examine and use its information without distintion of young student or specialist, native or foreigner, etc.
