본 연구는 서울교육종단연구에 포함된 중학생 자료를 이용하여 가정 내 사회자본에 비해 상대적으로 주목받지 못했던 학교 내 사회자본이 학업성취 격차에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하기 위해 수행 되었다. 특히 본 연구에서는 학업성취에 대한 사회경제적 배경과 가정 내 사회자본의 영향력이 교사- 학생 관계와 교사 간 관계로 대표되는 학교 내 사회자본에 의해 달라지는지를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 교사-학생 관계와 교사 간 관계는 학교평균 SES가 통제된 상태에서는 영어와 수학 과목 모두에서 학 교의 평균적인 학업성취 수준을 높이는 데 유의한 영향력을 행사하지 못하고 있었다. 또한 학업성취에 대한 부모자녀관계의 영향력에 대해 교사-학생 관계와 교사 간 관계는 모두 유의한 영향력을 행사하 지 못했다. 그러나 교사-학생 관계는 영어와 수학 과목 모두에서 사회경제적 배경이 학업성취에 미치 는 영향력을 감소시켜 주고 있었다. 반면 교사 간 관계는 영어 과목에서는 유의한 영향력을 행사하지 못했지만 수학 과목에서는 오히려 학업성취에 대한 사회경제적 배경의 영향력을 증가시키고 있었다. 이를 통해 본 연구에서는 사회경제적 배경에 따른 교육격차 감소와 관련하여 학교 내 사회자본의 작 용 양상이 다를 수 있음을 주장하면서 교사-학생 간의 관계나 교사 간 관계가 사회경제적 배경에 따 른 학업성취 격차에 미치는 영향력의 기제를 확인할 것을 제안하였다.

영문초록

Using data on middle school students from the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study of 2010 (SELS), the researchers analyzed the effect of social capital in school, a subject which has not received as much attention the effect of family, on the academic achievement gap. Specifically, this study analyzes how the effects of SES and family social capital on academic achievement vary according to social capital in the school, such as teacher-student relationships and teachers’ relationships. After controlling for school SES, we found neither teacher-student relationships nor the teachers’ relationships have significant effects on a school’s academic achievement in English and math. Neither relationship amplifies the effects of parent-child relationships on academic achievement, but the teacher-student relationship reduces the effects of SES on English and math achievement. In contrast, the teachers’ relationships increase the effects of SES on math achievement, but do not have a significant effect on English achievement. Based on the analysis results, we argue that the role of social capital in school in reducing the educational gaps created by differences in SES varies and suggest that it is necessary to examine the effect mechanisms of the teacher-student relationship and the teachers’ relationship on academic achievement by SES.
