‘생명나무’ 은유를 활용한 이야기 치료적 접근은 내담자들이 ‘나무’의 은유를 사용하여 자신의 삶에 대한 이야 기를 풍성히 서술할 수 있도록 돕는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 이야기치료의 과정 중에 ‘생명나무’은유를 활용한 단 일 사례를 연구함으로써, 이것이 상담의 전체 과정과 내담자의 삶에 미친 영향력에 대해 연구하였다. 본 사례는 2012년 10월부터 2013년 1월까지 총 25회 동안 진행된 초등학교 4학년 남아의 상담 사례 중 ‘생명나무’의 은유를 사용하여 아동의 대안적 이야기를 확장, 강화될 수 있도록 시도한 12~ 17회기의 6회기 동안의 내러티브에 대한 탐색을 제시하였다. 이 아동은 친구들과의 관계가 원만하지 못하고, 충동조절을 잘 하지 못하며, 공격성을 쉽게 나타내 보이고, 컴퓨터 게임에 과다하게 몰입함으로써 모와의 갈등을 일으키고, 학습능력이 저하되는 등의 문제 를 아동의 모가 호소하며 상담을 의뢰하였다. ‘생명나무’의 은유를 이야기치료의 과정에 활용함으로써 내담자 삶 의 이야기가 단독적으로 존재하여 다른 사회적인 부분들과는 분리된 것이 아니라, 내담자 삶의 각 부분들과 그리 고 다른 사람들과의 다양한 관계 속에서 주고받는 영향들을 여러 가지 가능성들을 두고 탐색하는 것이 가능했다. 또한 내담자가 ‘생명나무’의 각 부분에 대한 이야기를 써 넣고 그러한 이야기들이 자신의 삶과 다른 사람들의 삶 에 어떠한 영향을 미쳐왔는지에 대한 탐색을 통해 상담의 과정에서 드러났던 독특한 결과와 대안적 이야기가 내 담자의 삶에 더욱 강력한 영향력을 미칠 수 있도록 강화할 수 있었다.
Counselors who work within the narrative perspectives are interested in the experienced narratives of people and attempt to study these experienced narratives of people in the interdisciplinary field. In the narrative perspective, every life story of each person is taken seriously and understood by their own frame of meaning making. ‘Tree of life’ metaphor enables people to think about their life positively and to make it’s rich descriptions within narrative perspectives. The ‘Tree of life’ is a hopeful and inspiring approach to work with children/youth/adult/community who have negative problematic stories. This metaphor was co-developed by Nczelo Ncube and David Denborough to help children who have experienced loss by HIV/ADIS. Through this ‘Tree of life’ metaphor could support children to have the dream and the hope within their life through reducing negative effects of their problematic stories. This research tried to adopt the ‘Tree of life’ metaphor for a child who experienced difficulties with relationships and controling own behavior and emotions. During the process of the ‘Tree of life’ activity, the child could find various positive meanings and effect of his life and these stories could stimulate refocusing his identity which have lots of possibilities to be the alternative stories.
