영문초록

Museum is, as refered in Charter of Museum, not only a life-long education center but also a social education institution. Museum presents to students many kinds of actual experiences that contain visual and tactile experiences, such as seeing and touching some actual objects. These experiences compensate for the lack of dynamic experiences that school system cannot deliever. The educational-function of museum is emphasized gradually in proportion to the increasing numbers of visitors, who are interested in museum. This situation is caused by the rise of income level, induction of the 7th national curriculum and five-day workweek. Especially for elementary school age, museums should cooperate with schools because elementary school students have more opportunities to visit museum for experimental field study and learning. Up to the present, mainstream of museum education was educating by exhibition and operating a museum school by opening a subject. But now, museum education needs unique approach for performing the educational function. Education by exhibition, one of the main function of museum education, have focused on the customer-oriented problem such as satisfying visitor' s comprehension and interest rates, and applied exhibition methodology using variety of medium for experimental exhibition. It is desirable that the methodology raised satisfaction level of students. But on the other hand, that methodology is apt to lead students to simple amusement and pleasure. In short, elementary school students are not capable of understanding profound theme of exhibition for themselves. Teachers, parents, or curator can help the students to understand exhibition theme and contents. But under the present circumstances, it is inevitable that students can only go sightseeing in the museum independent of teachers. This situation results from the overpopulation of the students that the teacher can control, lack of proper program that meets students' needs, and deficiency of supervision system of the education ministry. In this study, I purpose to clarify various kinds of issues regarding museum education and to examine existing state closely. To achieve this purpose, a research into the current curriculum of elementary school and a questionnaire survey targeting the persent teachers are conducted. Therefore, I propose two alternative measure. One is developing a educational program using workbook which is based on the study of exhibition contents and school curriculum. The other is encouraging students to participate in experimental field based on the actual contents of exhibition. These two measures should be applied on the premise that teachers have the initiative in museum education.
