A Western view of nature has maintained an arrogant attitude of “Conquest
of Nature,” because it views humans and nature separately. A technical logic,
which was out of the control of humans, has caused a serious environmental crisis
by promoting moral indifference on the nature.
If the cause of the environmental problems derived from the Western
thought, I think the clue of the current environmental problems could be found
from the traditional thought of the Koreans. The reason is that Koreans have
pursued ecological lives of oneness, unity and harmony.
This study investigated the views of nature shown in Confucianism, Buddhism
and Taoism and their suggestions for ecoism.
This study also looked into the aesthetic sense of Koreans according to the
view of nature, and appreciated the ‘Eight-Panel Bedside Screen’ of Sun Jung
(Gyeomjae, pen name) from the ecoism perspective.
Based on all these, the role of traditional art for ecoism art education was
identified in this paper.
