In this paper, I investigated that how the development of modern drawing
education and its impact had affected the secondary school at those times. Also I
examined mechanical drawing textbooks educated in Kyungsung High School of
Engineering.
The contents of the modern mechanical drawing textbooks are composed of
three categories. First, mechanical drawing textbooks were based upon the plane
geometry drawing method. Second, they include the projection drawing method.
Third, they also include the perspective drawing method.
This study presented some supporting evidence that mechanical drawing
education was offered by Government Technical Training Institute (1907-1922)
(major hub of mechanical drawing education), Kyungsung National Institute of
Engineering(1922-1934), Kyungsung Provincial Institute of Engineering(1938-1945),
Kyungsung High School of Engineering(1922-1945). In particular, Kyungsung High
School of Engieering served as a sole organization for higher education, and it is
undeniable that numerous graduates from here contributed considerably to Korea's
industrial breakthrough together with science and technology education during the
modern era.
This study can lay the foundation for wide-ranging discussions about
mechanical drawing education as part of modern art education, thereby broadening
horizons of studies on the history of Korean art education.
