『성호사설』 「천지문」의 고찰을 통해 성호 이익의 학문과 사상을 살펴보려 하였다. 필자는 「천지문」 항목과 내용 검토를 해본 결과 몇 가지 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 그의 학문과 사상에서는 근대적 사유와 전근대적 지식이 혼효된 측면을 고찰할 수 있는데, 「천지문」 전체 항목과 내용 구성으로 볼 때 당대 어떠한 인물보다 진보된 사유를 하고 있었음을 엿볼 수가 있었다. 특히, 그의 천문관에서 지구자전의 가능성 사유, 중국문화를 탈피하는 서양역법의 우수성 인정 등과 한국사의 기원에 크게 관심을 가지면서 중국 동북지역을 중국 역사와 다르게 이해하려는 관점은 근대적 사유의 특징이라 이해된다. 또한, 신분문제와 울릉도에 대한 영토의식 등은 근대적인 입장에서 나온 견해들이다. 그러나 여전히 전근대적 사유와 지식도 다소 드러난 항목과 내용 들이 있는데, 전통적 유학사상과 민속에 관한 사유는 그 대표적인 사례이다. 또한, 중국 문물에 대한 이해에서 직접 경험이 없이 자료에 의자하다 보니 전근대일 수밖에 없지 않는가 하는 생각이다. 그러므로 「천지문」만을 검토한 결과에 의한다면 성호 이익의 사상은 근대적 측면이 높다는 조심스런 해석이 가능하다.
The aim was to examine Seongho Lee Ik`s learning and thought through considering 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』 「Cheonjimun(天地門)」. The writer could confirm some facts as a result of examining items and contents of 「Cheonjimun」. His learning and thought can be considered the aspect that was confused the modern reason and the premodern knowledge. Seeing it with the whole items and the content composition in 「Cheonjimun」, he could be observed to have had the progressed reason more than any other characters in those days. Especially, the characteristics in modern reason are understood as the reason of possibility for the rotation of the earth in his astronomical view, as the recognition of excellence in western calender of escaping Chinese culture, and as the perspective of trying to understand the northeastern region in China differently from Chinese history while having great interest in the origin of Korean history. Also, the identification problem and the territorial consciousness on the Ulreungdo island are opinions that resulted from the modern position. However, there are items and contents in which even the premodern reason and knowledge were slightly revealed yet. The reason on the traditional Confucian thought and the folklore is its typical case. Also, the understanding about Chinese civilization is relied upon materials without direct experience, thereby being thought to cannot help likely being premodern. Therefore, given relying upon the result of examining only 「Cheonjimun」, Seongho Lee Ik`s thought is possible to be carefully analyzed as saying of being high in modern aspect.
